“Hold still,” said Aurora, spraying that wretched, foul-smelling liquid again.
Clutching my hands into fists in my lap, I sputtered and shut my eyes.
Roulette chuckled from behind me on her bed. “I think you can lay off the spray, Rora. Any more and her hair might be stiff forever.”
The horrid sound stopped and I coughed some more until that hairspray dissipated into a mildly foul lingering scent. Opening my eyes, I took in my reflection in the mirror. With countless metal pins and softer hair ties and too much foul spray, Aurora had arranged my hair in what she called an updo, something similar to Miss Elizabeth Bennet on the cover of the book in my lap.
“Given the soft, straight hair I’m working with, she needs a little stiffness to get it to stick.” She nodded at me in the mirror.
“That can’t be good for the babies, either,” said Roulette, getting off the bed to grab the can. She frowned as she stared at it. “Yeah, let’s get rid of this.”
I didn’t want to ask. The smell of it made me feel like I was tearing a hole in the protective layer around the planet. All because I’d wanted to do something meaningful before I said farewell to Rhett.
I’d convinced Aurora and the rest of Veras at least to let him go—with a “warning,” so to speak. But even if I could go with Rhett, even if he’d wanted me to, I wasn’t sure if I should.
“Are you sure about this?” Aurora asked quietly. “You think you can really sleep with him and then just… say goodbye?”
“I don’t know if we will sleep,” I said.
“That’s the idea, right?” Roulette tittered.
“I just want to spend some time with him,” I said. “Before we part.” I swallowed. I’d have to go to Second Hope on my own if I couldn’t stay with the R.I.A.
My brother couldn’t fault me for finding my purpose.
“Alanna, I know it’s hard. But, bumbling as they may be, these guys just don’t agree with us.” Aurora tapped her abdomen. “If they try something like kidnapping again, if they try to hurt Alarik or Zander or any of us—”
“I know,” I said. “You don’t have to say anything more.” Besides, the R.I.A. wouldn’t want me near them regardless. They were useless around me. Well, I wasn’t going to be useless. Not if I could help the children like Lacey.
Chastity appeared in the doorway, knocking on the open door. “So Wade let that R.I.A. guy talk to his friends—briefly—and he thinks they’re satisfied he’ll be on his way tomorrow morning.” Her lips turned down as she stared at me. “You sure about this, princess?”
I nodded. I didn’t know how much she knew, but she was observant, that one. “Then the Renegades will pick me up again and I’ll no longer be a bother,” I said. “You’ll all have your powers back soon enough.”
“You’re never a bother, Alanna,” Aurora said.
Chastity raised an eyebrow at that and turned on her heel. It was all right.
